Second shooter....
Just a quick post - I have been thinking about this a lot lately - Jessy, my daughter and second shooter is just amazing. We have shot together for so many years- she is far more a partner to me and an equal than an assistant.
I think it's so important for a second shooter to be in tune with the main photographer. I can trust Jessy completely to get different angles than me - she anticipates things as I do them - really she is invaluable - offers up advice as well. She knows how to get my shot from a different perspective which is huge and often wanders behind me and finds the best light for a new angle... It's important for a second shooter to NOT be a first shooter...and if you have shot weddings, you know what I mean. When Jessy and I first started out, I used some of her photos...she nailed some but now - I use so many...often she goes and first shoots things for me if our time is short.
She only uses my 70-200 lens which if it wasn't her using it, I would have to steal it at times but I trust her completely... Lenses make a huge difference too- you can see the difference in the lenses in the following 2 photos...
While I get this with my 50 1.2 (f/2.5, 1/1000, iso 250):
I have recently added a 3rd shooter...my niece Lissy came to work with us back in October of 2013. She is my niece so we are already mind melded! She has shot a few weddings with us...she's learned quickly...I tell her to get back and get what I can't from afar...I love getting a close up and a far away landscape type of shot... While I got this (same settings as my one above): She got this(Canon 6D 2.8 1/500 and iso 320) using My 24-70 lens (the new one):
